88% of CIOs Are Accountable for AI They Can't Actually See

PA Media is reporting that 88% of CIOs say AI adoption is outpacing governance, leaving them accountable without control. I believe the number, but I'd question the framing. Governance falls behind when it's built as a review gate, and gates don't scale once any team can switch on an AI feature inside a tool they already use. The CIOs I've sat with on governance committees rarely lacked policies. What they lacked was a live inventory and a named owner for every use case. Control starts with knowing what's running. If you can't list every AI system in production today, what exactly are you accountable for?
