New York banned chatbot flattery. Now someone has to define it
New York's new law bans companion chatbots from flattering kids under 18, and it takes effect Jan. 1. The Future of Privacy Forum's Justine Gluck flagged the real problem: where ordinary conversational responsiveness ends and prohibited behavior begins. In a companion product, being agreeable is the product, so flattery isn't an edge case. When I helped operationalize a GDPR program, the hardest work was turning vague legal words into tests someone could actually run and fail. Developers have about two months to write their own definition of flattery into their evals. If they don't, the attorney general's office will write it for them.
